R-Date class

When you have completed pre-learner requirements, you can:

  • enrol into the Motor Bike Pre-licence Course
  • complete a Motor Bike Licence Assessment.

When you have completed the Motor Bike Licence Assessment, you can apply for an R-Date licence. You will need to meet eligibility to get the motor bike licence.

R-Date class means that you are restricted to riding a learner-approved motor bike (PDF, 2157 KB).

Steps to get an R-Date class licence

  1. Be at least 19 years old.
  2. Hold an R-Date learners permit for at least 12 months. You must hold this permit before you can get an R-Date licence. This applies regardless of age and whether you hold a licence of any type.
  3. Pass the Motor Bike Pre-Licence Course.
  4. Pass the Motor Bike Licence Assessment.
  5. Attend any Service SA customer service centre to apply for an R-Date licence. You must have a South Australian driver's licence endorsed with the R-Date class before you can ride a motor bike without L plates.

R-Date conditions and rules

If you hold an R-Date licence, you must meet the following conditions and rules:

  • You must hold an R-Date class for two years before being eligible for an R class.
  • If you hold a car licence, the R-Date motor bike class will be added to your driver’s licence.
  • If you hold a full licence for another class of vehicle, such as a car or truck:
    • you are not subject to provisional licence conditions and rules
    • you do not have to display P plates on your motor bike.
  • Your licence will be restricted to an automatic motor bike if you passed the Motor Bike Licence Assessment on an automatic motor bike.
  • Zero blood alcohol concentration applies when riding a motor bike. This applies to all R-Date licence holders, even if you hold a full licence.
  • Riders on an R-Date licence can carry pillion passengers.
