My motorcycle licence

R-Date class

After successfully completing the Rider Safe advanced course, present your certificate of competency at any Service SA customer service centre to apply for a R-Date licence.

R-Date class means that you are restricted to riding a learner approved motorcycle (PDF, 2157 KB).

Steps to get a Class R-Date licence

  1. Minimum age 19
  2. You will be required to have a full 12 months on an RD learner's permit before you can be issued an R-Date licence regardless of age and regardless of whether you hold a licence of any type;
  3. If you do not already hold a driver’s licence for another class you must pass the Hazard Perception Test
  4. Pass the Advanced Rider Safe course
  5. Once an R-Date licence is issued you will be required to hold the R-Date class for 2 years before being eligible for an R class.

If your Advanced Rider Safe course was passed on an automatic motorcycle you will be restricted to ‘Automatic Motor Bike’ on your licence.

If you hold a driver's licence, the R-Date motorcycle class will be added to your driver’s licence.

Once you have passed the advanced Rider Safe course you must be issued with a South Australian driver's licence endorsed with the R-Date class before you can ride a motorbike without L Plates.

If you do not already hold a full licence for another class of licence, for example a car or truck, you will be subject to provisional licence conditions and rules.

If you hold a full licence for another class of licence, you do not have to display P plates on your motorbike and are not subject to provisional licence conditions and rules.

Zero BAC applies when riding a motorcycle for all R-Date licence holders regardless of whether a full licence is held.

Riders on an R-Date licence can carry pillion passengers.
