Learner's to provisional for car drivers

Checklist

If you have your learner's permit, you must meet these criteria before you can get your provisional licence for driving a car.

Hazard perception

Complete the Hazard Perception Test.

Minimum age requirement

You must be at least 17 years old to apply for a provisional licence to drive a car.

Period of learner's permit

Hold a learner's permit for a continuous period of at least:

  • 12 months, if you're less than 25 years old
  • 6 months, if you're 25 years or older.
Supervised driving

Complete at least 75 hours of supervised driving. This includes driving for at least 15 hours at night with a qualified supervising driver.

You must record this in your Driving Companion.

Driving test or course

Get your certificate of competency by passing one of these driving tests:

  • Vehicle on Road Test (VORT) practical driving test with a VORT authorised examiner
  • Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) course with a motor driving instructor.

These tests are not provided by Service SA. Contact a driving instructor or authorised examiner near you to book.

Get your temporary licence

Once you have fulfilled all the items above, visit a Service SA centre to get your provisional licence.

Bring these documents with you:

  • your learner's permit
  • your certificate of competency (from the VORT or CBT&A)
  • your Driving Companion with your declaration showing you've completed the compulsory driving hours.

Pay the provisional licence fee at the counter, and you'll receive a temporary licence.
