Unit 4: Task 25 - Turning in traffic

Learning Outcome

  1. The learner will turn right and left safely and competently in traffic under full control while complying with the 'Give Way' laws, 'turning' laws and the 'System of Car Control'; and
  2. The learner will competently select safe gaps when entering or crossing a flow of traffic on busy roads without unnecessary hesitation.

Assessment Standard

The learner will demonstrate compliance with road craft concepts at least 80% of the time (see pages 14-21) and compliance with the law during the assessment without assistance

Requirements

Turning left onto and from busy roads
  1. Display compliance with all 'Give Way' and 'turning' laws (observation, braking and steering);
  2. Maintain full vehicle control throughout each turn (i.e. no wide exits, question-mark turns, or stalls);
  3. When exiting or entering a busy road, keep as near as reasonably practicable to the left;
  4. Comply with the 'System of Car Control' throughout the assessment;
  5. Display competent selection of safe gaps when entering a traffic flow; and
  6. Display competent acceleration skills when entering a gap (See 'System of Car Control').
Turning right onto and from busy roads
  1. Display compliance with all 'Give Way' and turning' rules;
  2. Maintain full vehicle control throughout each turn (i.e. no wide exits, question-mark turns, or stalls);
  3. Comply with the 'System of Car Control' throughout the assessment;
  4. Make early selection of the most appropriate and lawful lane for turning;
  5. Display competent selection of safe gaps when entering or crossing a traffic flow when turning right; and
  6. Display competent acceleration skills when entering a safe gap or crossing a flow of traffic - (See 'System of Car Control').
